Traveling Builds Character

There are a lot of things that build character in a person.  When you finish a milestone in your life, when you overcome sorrow or when beat the odds of cancer, going through these events builds character.  Some people might even say there is a change in you.

My brother Rich would say going through what you did built character.  On a lighter note, we believe that traveling builds character.  Even though my brother and I have not traveled together extensively, we know that from the few travels that we did have that it made us richer inside of us.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro

When we came back from our trip to Rio de Janeiro our eyes were more open to other cultures, traditions, religions beliefs, etc.  It took the experience of going to another country and seeing for ourselves the lives of others.  It took the experience of dancing with its people, eating their food, and walking on their white sands to understand and believe that there was more to this life, our life, than what we had back home.

We learned that, in general, people are people where ever you go.   People still react to your smile, your consideration, and your respect of life that you know here.  It does not matter if you do not know their language or if the color of your skin is different than theirs.  It does not take traveling to understand this, but it does help in opening your eyes to the colors of the world and its people.

Traveling builds character.  You come back learning something new about life, about people and other cultures.  If I could, I’d travel more often.  You don’t even have to go far, you just have to keep your mind and heart open.

Thanks Hope! Just hope it means something to someone one day :)

  • Well … if I ever had an extra dollar I would love to travel. My last vacation was over a decade ago. The only person I know that ever travels is my rich relative. That’s a true story!
I just noticed your weather stats over on the sidebar Rolando. You have vacation temps at home ;-)
Today was the first day over freezing in over a month, but the North winds are blowing hard now. Back to sub-zero. Yheeuck

I know you mean Speedy. When we came back from vacation we said we could sell all we have just so we had money to travel lol. Stop working so hard and get your butt on a vacation.

Yeah it’s a pretty nice day today, but we could use the rain. Send some over will ya, but keep the ice, lol.

  • Excellent point. Much of what you wrote about could also be summed up with a similar expression, “Travel opens minds & hearts.”

When a person comes into contact with cultures different from their own, it widens their perspective of how they see the world. And as you similarly expressed, it connects people to each other. They are not just “people from a far off land.” They become real to us, & hopefully through the exchange, these cultures learns to appreciate & respect each other.

And through the experience, we grow & build character. In a cultural exchange, we learn as much about ourselves as we do about each other.

You’re exactly right Corey and it’s why traveling is so valuable. It’s not just a matter of getting away, but if your mind and heart is open, you can take something back with you more meaningful than just time off.

  • Rio must have been a wonderful time. I must agree that traveling can open your eyes big time. Here in the US we think the world revolves around us and that may be true in the financial world but beyond that, it’s a big world with a lot more going on than just America.

Rio was great! It was like your post ‘I Fell in Love a Million Times Today’ 24/7. It was the first trip that really opened my eyes to the world. I knew then that traveling is what I wanted to do. Since then I try to take a trip somewhere on this planet at least once every other year. Then I could forget about what’s happening back home and our economy.
